THE NIGHT OF THE POETS
NORA 5th – 27th JULY 2025
Journey through words, sounds and visions with the 43rd edition of the Festival The Night of the Poets organised by CeDAC / Multidisciplinary Circuit of Live Performance in Sardinia, scheduled from 5 to 27 July in the splendid setting of the archaeological area of Nora, the ancient Phoenician-Punic and later Roman city on the south-western coast of Sardinia, and held with the patronage and support of the MiC / Ministry of Culture, the Sardinia Region and the Municipality of Pula, and with the contribution of the Sardinia Foundation. Eleven titles on the programme including theatrical plays and urban dance performances, recitals and concerts with the national preview of “Hamlet in Purple”, the new project by Valentino Mannias (Ubu Award 2024 as best actor / performer under 35) with the musician Luca Spanu, and the debut on the Island of “In Città” by and with Valerio Aprea, a mise en espace of four stories from “I Sogni della Città Bianca” as a tribute to Sergio Atzeni on the fortieth anniversary of the passing of the author of “Apologo del giudice bgandito”, “Passavamo sulla terra leggeri” and “Il quinto passo è l’addio”.
Among the protagonists of The Night of the Poets are the journalist and writer Aldo Cazzullo and the actor, singer, playwright and director Moni Ovadia with “Il romanzo della Bibbia”, while GianMarco Tognazzi, accompanied by the Duo Saverio Mercadante, retraces the extraordinary career of the Fab Four in “Paul McCartney e I Beatles / Due Leggende”. One of the most established Italian directors, co-founder of the Teatro Settimo Laboratory and one of the creators of narrative theatre, Gabriele Vacis, directs the mise en scène of “Antigone e i suoi fratelli” with actors from the young company PoEM / Potentially Evoked Multimedia, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the ancient tragedy. Federica Rosellini, an eclectic actress, musician and performer, plays the cruel fable of “Ivan e i cani” about the adventures of a boy in 1990s Russia, in a climate of poverty and despair where his only refuge becomes a pack of strays.
The 43rd Festival The Night of the Poets hosts interesting musical projects such as “Arias / canti, cantos, cantileni e corde” for an ideal journey across the continents with the voices of Cristina Renzetti, Daniela Spalletta and Francesca Corrias accompanied by the guitar of Brazilian Roberto Taufic, and “Tumbarinos in Dub” with performer, composer and producer Francesco Medda “Arrogalla” and the Tumbarinos de Gavoi, for a concert where traditional sounds and rhythms of Sardinia blend with dub and electronic music and echoes of nature. “The Kings of Blues” arrive in Nora for an unmissable concert: on stage the amazing ensemble formed by Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne (2024 Blues Grammy winner for best pianist) with the New Orleans singer-songwriter and guitarist Vasti Jackson, saxophonist Waldo Weathers from James Brown’s band, as well as Russell Jackson and Tony Coleman, respectively bassist and drummer from B.B. King’s band, for an evening between biting irony and the poignant melancholy of the “devil’s music.” Finally, space is given to urban dance with “Hit Out” by Parini Secondo x Bienoise, which brings to the ruins of the ancient city a synthesis of “Hit,” a project inspired by skipping rope: Sissj Bassani, Martina Piazzi, Camilla Neri and Francesca Pizzagalli perform «a rhythmic and choreographic score where single-under, side-swing and double-under are both athletic and musical elements» intertwined with voices and electronic sounds.
The new feature of this edition will be the collaboration with the Bellonci Foundation; in fact, The Night of the Poets will be one of the stops for the shortlist of finalists for the 2025 Strega Poetry Prize: spotlight on the poems of Jonida Prifti, who presents “Sorelle di confine”. In the complexity of the present, the voices of poets offer illuminating reflections on the intimate and private aspects of existence as well as on collective dramas, all in the name of beauty.
