OPERA
COSI’ FAN TUTTE
From 17 to 22 April (five performances), a true gem of the 18th-century classical repertoire takes the stage: Così fan tutte, a dramma giocoso in two acts with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte and music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburg, 1756 – Vienna, 1791).
Absent from Cagliari since October 2013, the opera is presented in a production by the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, originally staged in the 1998–1999 season and marking the operatic directing debut of Mario Martone (Naples, 1959), the acclaimed film and theatre director, who now makes his Cagliari debut.
Federico Maria Sardelli (Livorno, 1963), a versatile and accomplished artist (musician, painter and writer), makes his debut on the Cagliari podium, conducting the resident orchestra and chorus in Mozart’s masterpiece.
TURANDOT
The fifth opera in the season, staged from 24 June to 2 July (five subscription performances and three additional performances), is Turandot, a lyrical drama in three acts and five scenes with a libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, based on the play by Carlo Gozzi, with music by Giacomo Puccini (Lucca, 1858 – Brussels, 1924). The work has not been performed in Cagliari since March/April 2017.
The production is conducted by the Milanese maestro Michele Gamba, former assistant to Antonio Pappano and Daniel Barenboim, returning to Cagliari after the success of his concerts in January 2019. The new production by the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is directed by Spanish director Rafael R. Villalobos (Seville, 1987), making his debut in the city.
IL CAPPELLO DI PAGLIA DI FIRENZE
From 23 to 27 September (five performances), Cagliari finally hosts, for the first time, the delightful four-act musical farce Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, with libretto by Nino Rota and Ernesta Rinaldi, based on Un chapeau de paille d’Italie by Eugène Labiche and Marc-Michel, and music by Nino Rota (Milan, 1911 – Rome, 1979).
This production from the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa dates back to 2007 and is directed by Damiano Michieletto (Venice, 1975), then an emerging talent on the Italian operatic scene, who previously worked in Cagliari in 2013 on Così fan tutte.
The performance is conducted by Maestro Valerio Galli (Viareggio, 1980), currently Principal Guest Conductor at the Opéra de Toulon and already known to Cagliari audiences since 2020 (Cavalleria rusticana and Fauré’s Requiem).
RIGOLETTO
The opera season concludes from 11 to 21 November (seven performances, including two extra performances) with one of the most beloved and popular titles: Rigoletto, a three-act opera with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse, and music by Giuseppe Verdi (Roncole di Busseto, Parma, 1813 – Milan, 1901), absent from Cagliari since December 2018.
The new production by the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is directed by Alessandro Talevi, a young South African director born in Johannesburg to an Italian father and an English mother, known for his inventive and imaginative style, making his debut in Cagliari.
Enrico Lombardi, a rising conductor with an already well-established career, also makes his debut in the city, conducting Verdi’s masterpiece.
* Booking must be made at least 10 days prior to the selected performance date, according to the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari programme.
